Planning and Marking

Determine the desired location for the shelf and use a level to mark the intended position of the brackets on the supporting surface (wall, upright, etc.). Consider the shelf’s weight-bearing requirements and ensure appropriate spacing between brackets for adequate support. For wall-mounted applications, identify the wall structure (e.g., stud locations for drywall) to ensure secure fixing.

Drilling

Pre-drilling pilot holes are recommended for hard surfaces like masonry or when attaching them to wall studs. Use a drill bit appropriate for the surface material and slightly smaller than the screws to be used for mounting. This facilitates easier screw insertion and helps prevent the supporting material from splitting.

Bracket Fitting

Align the bracket with the marked position, and if pilot holes have been drilled, align the screw holes in the bracket with the pilot holes. Using appropriate screws (typically wood screws for timber or screws with wall plugs for masonry or drywall), firmly attach the bracket to the supporting surface utilising a screwdriver or drill. Ensure the bracket is mounted at a level and securely fastened. The number of screws used per bracket will depend on the bracket design and the anticipated load.

Shelf Fitting

Once the brackets are securely installed, carefully position the shelf onto them, ensuring it rests evenly and is adequately supported. Some bracket designs may incorporate features like screw holes or lips to secure the shelf to the brackets further.
